I’m Quite The Nerd

And just to be clear – a nerd is not necessarily a dork or a geek.. There is a difference between those three…

What makes me such a nerd… A lot of things.

To name a few… I like the stock market, how computers work, solving riddles or puzzles or brain games, and backgammon (really like backgammon).

Still don’t think I’m a nerd? .. I’m laying in bed writing and posting this blog entry from my iPhone using the WordPress app… And that makes me happy… Yeah.

Oh, and did I mention I look like one too…

Below you will find a picture of me taken by John Sutter of The Sutter Group.. Who also provided me with the nifty glasses (thank you)..

They don’t look half bad, right?

No, I’m not a Harry Potter fan.

ONE MORE THING that makes me the ultimate nerd is that I look forward to the WordPress iPhone app update that allows you to put the picture in any desired place throughout the post, rather than just attaching it to the bottom.

Now if I went and hacked the source code and dev’d the update myself.. I’d be a geek.

AND if I wasn’t socially adept, I’d be a dork.

Did you catch the implied differences between nerd, geek, and dork slipped throughout?

Goodnight.

Eating Well Is NOT Easy

See what I mean:

Halloween candy on sale
Halloween Candy On Sale

My two favorite candies (I have a sweet tooth, not good for my mid-section goals, lol) were on sale at Giant.

$1 per bag – WHAT!? I put them in my cart, but after traversing a couple aisles and picking up the healthy and delicious foods I normally get (chicken, turkey, milk, eggs, etc…) – I decided to put the candy back.

Eating Well Is NOT THAT Hard

All it takes is the right combination of spices.

I do admit that cooking and cleaning take time and resources, but I think that if you enjoy cooking and cleaning up after yourself, then it’s absolutely worth it.

(Here is a discussion about cooking or eating out – go leave your opinion there, or comment below)

Anyway – I’m 50/50 – I love eating out because the food is delicious, but I also want to be healthy (aliment free) and live for a loooong time… so I tend to cook more often.

Does this not look delicious:

Spanish Chicken & Potatoes.
Spanish Chicken & Potatoes

Ok, maybe the potatoes aren’t the best part, but it sure was yummy!

Eat well, live well.

If You Don’t Like The Weather In Maryland

Maryland’s weather is notorious for being unpredictable and for changing dramatically in short periods of time.

So much so that there is a saying: “If you don’t like the weather in Maryland, just wait 5 minutes!”

It’s obviously not THAT dramatic — But I’ve lived here my whole life and can attest to us having some weird weather.

For instance – the winter of 2009-2010 gave us one of the biggest blizzards MD has ever seen – Some parts got over 2 feet of snow in less than 12 hours…

And now, here we are 6 months later in July – melting away in 102 degree weather – with a heat index of 115.

If you don’t have AC, I feel very bad for you.. but if you don’t like the weather.. well, I’m not sure waiting 5 minutes is going to help you in this situation 🙂

It’s funny because Maryland residence have to have really good AC units/Heat pumps… they have to own a snow blower… and a power generator for when the hurricane-ish storms come in off the east coast and blow the trees onto our power lines.

Oh Maryland, how I love thee so.

PS – my house’s AC broke today… I’m melting.

Update: Thank goodness for Atlantic Mechanical who came out and fixed our air conditioning with less than a days notice.

I called them on a Tuesday, they came out and fixed it the next day… only cost $120 and we had nice cool air flowing through the house again.

Hey Maryland, figure it out already!

My Favorite iPhone OS4 Updates & Feature Additions

You probably already know that Apple came out with their iPhone OS4 update. The addition of several different features has got me ranting and raving about the iPhone again!

So much so that I’ve forgot how bad AT&T’s service is… just recently the service went from being spectacular to being sub-par… Did AT&T knock down a tower near me? — WHAT GIVES!?

Sorry.. on with the iPhone OS4 features and stuff…

My Favorite Updates & Additions on OS4

Here is a list of my favorite updates for the new iPhone operating system.

Spell Check

Everything has spell check now, which for me, someone who only scored 500 on the verbal SAT, is a BIG DEAL!

Threaded Email

Email conversations that have the same subject line are threaded together, much like Gmail… awesome.

Photo Gallery Shows Where You Took The Picture

Are you kidding me with this?  by far the coolest update.

Now when you take a picture with your iPhone, it tags where you are geographically – and then shows you all your pictures on a map.

I think this is extremely neat, and somewhat useful too.
I’m showing off to friends and family.. Look where I’ve been!

Wondering if the it will work internationally too.. anyone know?

Multi Task With Pandora

You know Pandora, the program that plays similar music to an artist or song that you put in?  I love Pandora.

It used to be that when you leave the Pandora application on your iPhone, the music would stop.  So if you got an email or text you want to reply to, you’d have to lose your music to do so.

Now, with the new iPhone OS4 upgrade – You can Pandora and text, email, or even Facebook!

This is my 2nd favorite feature added on OS4 behind the photo gallery geography thing.

Set Your Background

A simple update that allows your background or wallpaper to show once you’re in your iPhone.  It used to only show on the welcome (or locked) screen.

Search Text Messages

I personally don’t text message enough to make this one that useful, but it’s definitely cool that you can now search your text messages.

So that’s it – those are my favorite additions and features of the iPhone OS4 update — what do you think?

2010 Is Already Half Way Done?

Today is July 1st, 2010 – the first day of the 3rd quarter of 2010… that means 2010 is already half way over and done with!?

That’s CRAZY! I feel like 2009 was just yesteraday, and we are already half way to 2011? How is this possible?

Time flies when you’re having fun? Time flies when you’re busy?

Am I busy and having fun? — Actually, yes – WebMechanix is very fun and definitely picking up steam… which makes me uber busy.

Anyhow, I’m making a half-year resolution:

I will be a a better human being.

2010 is already half way done!

I know you’re saying, what does that mean… well I’ll tell you:

  • Cut back on drinking
  • Be more transparent with my emotions
  • Living by a “How may I serve you” mentality
  • Become more active

That’s NOT to say…

  • …I wasn’t active before… and I’m not just talking gym and sports, you might find me volunteering and donating to charities 🙂
  • …I’m going to put people ahead of myself (until I find “the one”)
  • …I’m going to stop parting

Anyway, life is good – and I want to make it better… don’t hate – congratulate.

What are you doing to make your life and the world a better place?

Credit Is Neat.. IFF Used Correctly

I know you’re thinking I misspelled “if” in the title .. actually, “IFF” is shorthand for “if and only if” (ask any computer programmer).

Anyway… credit is awesome! – Credit cards, lines of credit, preferred accounts with vendors, etc.. ALL GOOD STUFF — IF AND ONLY IF used correctly.. let me explain:

I have a preferred account with Newegg – what that means is:

  • Free Rush Processing – my order goes to the top of the queue and gets filled fast
  • Discounted shopping – there are promotions that are exclusively for preferred account holders
  • Line of credit! – which means I can buy now, but pay later!

More specifically, if the order is over $500, I don’t have to pay anything for 6 months (before they start charing an arm and a leg in interest) – and if the order is over $999, I have 12 months of deferred interest.

So basically, I don’t have to pay BECAUSE I have good credit and Newegg trusts me.. which is great for if I need computer equipment NOW but don’t want to pay the full amount, NOW.

Here is where is gets tricky… IF YOU DON’T PAY it all off within that given period of time, YOU WILL BE CHARGED INTEREST!

And I THINK (but am not sure on this, someone comment and let me know) that the amount of interest you had deferred in the time period will get tacked on in full (if you don’t pay it all off in time).

I could be wrong about that, but if it’s true, it would REALLY hurt.

And the same is true for any credit card.. they say: 0% APR for 12 months!

— OK GREAT! What happens after 12 months when you’ve put $3,476 on your card and haven’t paid a dime towards it.. you think they are going to start charging you interest on the 13th month? NO – They are going to charge you for all the months that you used their money and didn’t pay them back!

It’s only 0% APR if you pay the minimum payment during the 12 month period and then have it paid off by the end of the 12th month.. OTHERWISE you will be charge interest – and it won’t feel good.

But again, if you know you’re going to be getting paid (like you have a steady job or stream of income) – then using a credit card isn’t bad.

You get to have what you want/need immediately and pay for it when you have the money.

Just make sure you will actually have the money within 30 days (50 days max, depending on when your credit account revolves).. 🙂

I’m not an expert in this stuff, but I’ve never paid a lick of interest in my life – yet I am always using credit cards and over extending myself by a couple hundred bucks until the next paycheck.

THE BEST PART ABOUT CREDIT CARDS: I can’t believe I forgot this until now.. The MAIN reason I even use credit cards (aside from building my credit for future needs) – is for the POINTS! duh!!

My philosophy is this: If you have the money, and you’re going to spend it anyway.. why pay cash or with your bank check card? .. I have 2 free round trip flights (48 states) thanks to using 2 credit cards for a couple years..

I would have spent that money anyway, but didn’t have to go to the bank to take money out.. instead, I had to log into online banking and transfer funds from the checking account to the credit card, easy.

Now if you tend to forget things – then this method might not be the best for you in that you do need to remember to pay your credit card on a monthly basis (but they have email reminders now-a-days.. so this shouldn’t be an excuse).

Anyway, let me know if you have questions, I’m going to go buy some beer on my credit card now… good day!

I Will Always Get Custom Made Clothes & Suits

Eric Finn Custom Clothiers came by today to do the final fitting of my custom tailored suit.. IT LOOKS AMAZING!

Guess I should have taken a picture of it while the suit was on me, but it was chalked up in a couple places to go back to get tailored a little more.. just so that it’s extra perfectly fit to my sexy body (had to throw that in there).

I’m so excited to go on business meetings now, and I think I might have to buy another suit from him as well..

Oh, did I mention that they hook it up with shirts to go along with these suits.. custom fitted shirts that is.. with your initials embroidered in there (and the suit has your whole name embroidered on the inside)

More pictures to come when I get the finalized suit and put it on.. I’ll probably have a photo shoot done haha — YES!

Thank you Eric Finn!

Inspiration Is Perishable – Thanks 37Signals

Just finished reading the book ReWork by Jason Fried and David Hansson, founders of 37Signals (makers of awesome small business software such as BaseCampHQ)

Awesome guys.. pure awesome.  I’m a raving fan.

What I really like is the short sections that touch on the most important aspects of the chapter they are contained within.

For instance, in the Productivity chapter, there is a section called Interruption is the enemy of productivity.  This is so, so true.

I seriously couldn’t agree more.. it’s awesome because we (when I say “we”, I mean me and my team at WebMechanix) already practiced some of what you guys preach.

When we worked on this career college in Toronto, Canada – we would shut everything off, including phones (cell phones are the WORST) – and THEN we did our work.

AND we did the work in the morning, because you’re fresh in the morning — I’m telling you, 8-10am is 400x more productive than 3-5pm (you agree?)..

Another awesome example from ReWork is the section called Hire great writers in the section Hiring.

EVERYONE writes.. emails, training documentation, blog posts.. AND like you said, good writers are good communicators — and EVERYONE communicates (at least you hope they do :).

The absolute best part of the book was the very last chapter… Inspiration is perishable

This is 200% true (if that’s such a thing).. I can’t tell you how many times someone has told me about an idea, and it sounds pretty good – and they sound passionate and inspired, but then they never do anything about it.

There are a couple quotes (if you don’t mind me posting them here) that I loved:

Ideas are immortal. They last forever. What doesn’t last forever is inspiration.  Inspiration is like fresh fruit or milk: It has an expiration date.

And another one:

Inspiration is a magical thing, a productivity multiplier, a motivator.

All in all, great book guys, thanks a lot for putting your thoughts down on paper and being the best teachers 🙂

Google Servers Are DOWN!

This is the first time I’ve ever seen Google’s servers go down!

I bet you by the time I’m done writing this post, they will be back up…

NOPE – not yet.. Google’s servers are still down..

I bet you Yahoo and Bing are getting a lot of traffic right now.. watch their servers go down too LOL..

OHHH and Google is back & I just had a conversation with myself.. good times!
